Kalecik Karasi (Ka-le-chik Ka-ra-si) means "black from the little castle". Kalecik is a small village (65 km northeast of Ankara) in Central Anatolia with a castle. Kalecik Karasi is mainly grown near the Kizilirmak river valley.

Kalecik Karasi delivers a wine that is similar in color to dried red roses and with an aroma of rock sugar and caramel on the nose that is typical of the variety. Good wines from the Kalecik Karasi vine have a lively, fruity nose with red fruits.

On the palate, the wine has a medium body and few tannins. It's fresh and lively, with a crisp acidity. In the hotter climates, the alcohol content can reach high levels and make the wine heavy.

Although Ankara has hot, dry summers and cold, snowy winters, the Kizilirmak River creates a special microclimate in the Kalecik region, making it milder in winter. This is beneficial for this vine.
