Wine has been grown in the area of today's Turkey for over 6000 years. This is where the grapevine comes from as a plant, and so this country still has the most indigenous grape varieties in the world. Let yourself be inspired by exotic grapes, discover new aromas from the early history of viticulture and try wine from its country of origin.
Many people are surprised when they come to Turkey and taste the excellent wine that is on offer there. And we're not talking about the cheap booze of the all-inclusive hotel industry, because unfortunately you won't find the extraordinary wines there.
But a long day of sightseeing that ends with a tasty glass of wine and delicious food makes your vacation an unforgettable experience. Mostly people are surprised that the Muslim country is one of the best wine producers. That's because only some of the brilliant wines that are produced there make it out of the country. And we want to change that!
Turkey produces very good wines, which are made from old and unique grape varieties, which combine perfectly with the hearty but at the same time Mediterranean food, and also go well with European dishes. The wines simply stand out from the crowd because the country has been producing wine for thousands of years, longer than most other countries on earth. Wine production in Turkey dates back thousands of years, and the country has long produced wines that taste heavenly. There is archaeological evidence that Turkey has been making wine for over seven thousand years. It is one of the oldest wine-growing countries in the world, but unfortunately only a fraction of its products reach wine connoisseurs in the rest of the world.
There are more than six hundred indigenous grape varieties in the country, and the diverse gene pool of grapes offers great opportunities for the wine trade. But only 5% of the native grape varieties are used to make wine.
There are four main wine-growing areas in the country, including the Aegean with around 2/3 of the cultivation volume, as the climatic conditions there are very good. Behind it Thrace, with the cultivation areas around Tekirdag, Canakkale, Edirne, Kirklareli and Bilecik. Central Anatolia with the areas around Ankara, Kirikkale, Kirsehir and Nigde. As well as the Black Sea area, the place of origin of wine in general, with the cities of Corum, Tokat, Kastamonu and Samsun.
Since only 5% of the grapes are used to make wine, there are many boutique wineries in Turkey such as Urlice, Suvla, MMG, Arcadia, Pasaeli, Pamukkale, USCA and many others that make up a large part of the Turkish wine industry. We would like to introduce these small but fine winegrowers to you here.
Turkish wine tastes a little different than in other countries, as the variety of grapes produced there is different and also unique. But that's what makes Turkish wine more interesting, the antiquity of viticulture and with it this uniqueness!
